On Monday 20 November, King Filip of Belgium awarded the title of baroness to mathematician Ingrid Daubechies and historian Sophie De Schaepdrijver. Both professors studied at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Ingrid Daubechies is currently teaching mathematics at Duke University in the US and is known for her pioneering work on wavelets for image compression. Sophie De Schaepdrijver is Professor of History (Modern Europe) at Pennsylvania State University. She is widely recognized as an expert of the First World War. In addition to Daubechies and De Schaepdrijver, six other persons were raised to nobility status.
