In the new Times Higher Education Ranking (THE), the Vrije Universiteit Brussel lands between places 251 and 300. That is the best result for the university since 2011 - only in 2014 did VUB end up at a comparable place, namely between the 275-300 best universities of the world. The THE exists since 2004 and is the only ranking that rank universities worldwide on their so-called ‘core criteria’: education, research, citations, international appeal and income from the industry.

To be ranked in the Times Higher Education Ranking among the top 300 universities in the world is quite an achievement. The THE ranks no less than 1,250 universities. The top 10 is headed by the University of Oxford. Number 2 is Harvard University and number 3 is the Masachusetts Institute of Technology. The first university that is not based in England or America can be found at number 20 and is located in the Netherlands: the University of Amsterdam (UvA). A total of 8 Belgian universities are included in the list. The VUB is number six in that ranking.
