During the award ceremony of Difference Day on the 3th of May in Bozar, a live video conversation will take place with the American whistleblower Edward Snowden who is residing in Russia. You can follow this conversation in the Henry Le Boeuf Hall of Bozar or via live streaming. Marleen Wynants (VUB Crosstalks) and Karl Van den Broeck (BOZAR, Apache) will interview Edward Snowden on themes as ‘wikitribune vs fake news’, security, juridical protection, release, speaking up and the importance of investigative journalism.
Snowden is wanted in the United States for violation of the Espionage Act. As an employee of the National Security Agency, he passed information on secret surveillance programs to a number of journalists, thus laying the foundations for revealing articles in a.o. The Guardian and The Washington Post. He then fled to Latin America and stranded in Russia. In January 2017, the Russian government extended his asylum with three years. In the US, he is facing a 30-year prison sentence.
This session is dedicated to the investigative journalist and documentary filmmaker Gavin McFadyen wo died last October. He was the director and founder of the Centre for Investigative Journalism in London. In 2015, he was a guest speaker on Difference Day and he introduced the biopic on Edward Snowden, ‘Citizenfour’ by Laura Poitras.
